Pros: All wood and metal; very sturdy
Cons: Lack of cheap replacements if one of the pieces breaks

I rated this product a 9 only because of the lack or replacements. This is a great and affective way to transform your AK47 into a LMG varient. It is unique, sturdy and quite cool looking. The bipod folds and unfolds easily and is full metal and quite sturdy.

This kit is very very rare, i was first in the market for an RPK in late Febuary and finally found and recieved one mid-july. This kit is not for impatient people. =)

Pros: Nice wood and solid metal; fits together easily
Cons: Could use improvements in fastening design

This is a fantastic kit in terms of feel and quality parts. It adds significant weight to your TM AK47, and the parts are well-made. By also adding a metal body, you\'ll have a very sturdy replica that will take a beating.

However, to truly get a 10-rating, the kit needs some improvements. Mainly, the threaded holes for the stock screws are not well-designed. The screws merely screw into the wood of the stock, which of course wear over time and isn\'t ideal for those who will be taking their gun apart numerous times over a long period. Thus, the stock will get loose and wobble eventually. An easy solution would have been to use metal inserts for the screws to engage in this area. Another weak area is the buttplate attachment method. Two flat metal disks are located in grooves in the inside surface of the stock. Threaded holes in the disks allow you to screw the buttplate into place. However, if you overtighten those screws repeatedly over time, the grooves will start to wear and the disks won\'t stay in place as well. Don\'t overtighten those screws.

Make sure to apply thin coats of silicone oil to the metal outer barrel, as it can rust easily.

The bipod is very sturdy and strong, but isn\'t that well-designed. I realize that isn\'t Guarder\'s fault however. Russian usability design as its\' best isn\'t that impressive.

In the area where the stock attaches to the body, the wall sections of the wood are somewhat thin. As a result, they can crack over time if the screws are overtightened, so keep an eye on that. If your stock does wobble, you may consider using T-nuts on the inside of the holes, which grip the wood and provide metal threads for screws to engage. I haven\'t done that yet, but might in the future if the wood threads continue to wear.

In the field, the weapon is easy to carry, but is long. If you are short or not very strong, be warned. The other downside of that true RPK replica mags aren\'t available and neither is an electric-winding RPK drum mag. That would using it as a support weapon that much easier.

For the price of this kit purchased new, there are some simple fixes that should have been included to make it more robust for assembly/disassembly. If you find an used kit, pick it up as it\'ll make a very nice addition to your arsenal. As it is, it is a very well-made product and very sturdy. Overall, I am very pleased with the kit and glad that I picked it up.

9/25/04 edit: I recently acquired another Guarder RPK kit, one which is in brand-new condition. The interesting thing is that the mounting holes in the wood stock DO have metal threaded inserts in them, which is obviously one of the things that bothered me the most in my review above. This newer kit must be an improved version.
