Does not like Classic Army magazines
|
|
After my first year of airsoft, I found that I had a growing collection of Armalite style magazines. With my first acquisition of a G36 style rifle, I quickly found myself trying to manage 2 different types of magazines, creating a logistical nightmare when trying to prepare enough hicaps and midcaps for each family. Soon I heard word that PPA, a Taiwanese company, released a conversion magwell that allowed G36 rifles to accept Armalite magazines. So I decided that I had to have one, and here we are.
First Impressions
A solid piece of plastic. A little sharp on the edges, but definitely feels like it can take some punishment without crumbling into a useless mess. The mag release lever feels very confident, not at all flimsy where you'd wonder if your magazine would fall out in the middle of a firefight (there are exceptions, noted below).
Installation
Installation was a breeze. Remove the existing magwell from your G36, install the PPA part, and voila, you're done. The PPA part was noticeably "tighter" around the forward pivot point. Don't be too afraid to introduce a little pressure to force it into place. The PPA part won't mind. The end result is a very tight fit on your rifle, but can easily be removed so that your original G36 magwell can be put back into place.
Usage
Here's where the crux of the problem is. With the plethora of magazine manufacturers, I was concerned that some magazines will not work with this part. And I was partially right. I tried using magazines from 5 manufacturers, and all but 1 manufacturer was able to function smoothly with this. The Tokyo Marui hicaps, ICS hicaps, G&P midcaps, and Star (plastic) locaps all were able to fit without any issues, nor drop out even when wiggled around. Classic Army hicaps, however, was able to be disengaged by wiggling the mag around when inserted in the magwell. The Tokyo Marui hicaps and Star locaps had the tightest fit, with very little wiggling available. The ICS hicaps and G&P midcaps were next as far as snugness.
Performance
Having played a full skirmish day with it, I had no feeding problems from using this with TM hicaps and ICS hicaps. With future attempts I will bring G&P midcaps and Star locaps to see if there are any feeding issues there.
Final thoughts
For $30 (shipped), this was a decent little upgrade part that allowed me to have more flexibility in managing my magazine stores. Having this allowed me to drop all future purchases of G36 hicaps and retain only my MAG G36 midcaps, while relegating all my hicap skirmishing needs to my existing supply of Armalite hicaps. For a hobby that can become very expensive, I expect this little part to save me hundreds of dollars in the long run.
Addendum
I have been running with the G&P Midcaps recently while playing in California, and culminated my experience in Lionclaws 6. Had no feeding issues when using the G&P Midcaps in conjunction with the mag well adapter. Other players also noticed me using it, and offered similar experiences in their uses.
