Description: Although I do not have the earlier version of Star's SL9 replica (which required Tokyo Marui's G36C for completion), I hope you find this review helpful in determining whether Star's latest products and ambitious foray into the AEG market is right for you.

First Impressions:

At first I was disappointed that the SL9 did not come with the signature Star hard plastic case. But the packing within the cardboard box was solid, so there's very little chance the rifle tumbling around and damaging itself. Included with the rifle is a loading road, a 20-round magazine, allen wrench to adjust the spacers, various sized screws for the spacers, and HK decal stickers, which is what I'm guessing Star to be doing to evade US Customs checks.

The rifle itself is very solidly built. No tweaking or twisting or any annoying loose parts, which is always a good thing.

The selector switch is solid, and switching between modes of fire (yes, full-auto is allowed) gives you confident clicks with very little slippage.

The magazine catch is a little stiffer than a TM G36's, requiring just a tad bit more force to push the magazine into the well before it will catch.

The top rail is just absolutely beautiful.

The extra long foregrip will allow for a thin 9.6v battery, or a stick battery.

The outer barrel does come pre-painted with the prerequisite orange tip, which can be easily removed with nail polish remover without damaging the base paint.

The inner barrel comes with the familiar TM G36 hopup adjustment. Rotate up for on, rotate down for off.

Last but not least, the adjustable cheek and shoulder rest is easily configured with the included allen wrench. With all the spacers in, it was a little uncomfortable for my 6'1" frame. After removing 2 spacers from both the cheek and shoulder rests, the rifle now sits comfortably in my grip.

Usability:

In stock form, Star claims it will shoot 360fps. With the exquisitely long barrel, the SL9 easily outranged my M4 with a 407mm inner barrel. However, accuracy suffered quite a bit at longer distances, in that shots tended to favor the bottom left quadrant (when viewed through a scope). It is slightly possible that the scope I was using was not adjusted correctly, thus my report could be skewed. On the other hand, after my first skirmish with it, I decided to try cleaning the inner barrel, and it took 10 swabs before the cloth came back clean. Subsequent trials during skirmishes showed relatively centered shots, although I have not been able to confirm grouping yet.

The 20-round magazine it came with is cute, but relatively useless when used in full-auto. But if you were to decide to modify the SL9 to become semi-only precision rifle, the 20-round mag would complete the look nicely.

I have not opened up the rifle to look at the insides yet, so when I get a chance to do that I will submit an addendum for the internals.

Pros: Solidly built, very unique looking, very good range
Cons: Proprietary outer barrel, limited battery options

Addendum to my original review. . .

I just tried fitting a 509mm tightbore, thinking that the external barrel had plenty of length to allow for the upgrade.

Unfortunately, it appears that Star decided to go propreitary with their 495mm inner barrel, which nobody but them makes. And the external barrel was crafted in such a way that the last few centimenters are tapered off enough such that the inner barrel does not have clearance to slide into that area. So with a 509mm barrel. . . you are left hanging with 14mm. . . not enough room for the external barrel to meet with the threading on the rest of the AEG to secure it in place.

So if you are thinking of wanting to put a tightbore in there, you are hereby forewarned of Star's proprietary parts.

Update 10/8/2006

I just noticed that the SL9 isn't feeding properly anymore. The Star/TM/CA hicap mags that I have been using is no longer guaranteeing trouble-free function. The Star midcap mag hasn't given me any grief yet, and so far it has only been limited to hicaps. Will be examining this issue some more to see whether I just have faulty mags, or if the internal hopup chamber needs to be replaced.

Update 10/14/2006

Checked the hopup and the bucking while I was swapping the stock inner barrel back in. Everything seems to be in order. Also had some rough chrono numbers. . . with the Madbull 509mm 6.03mm tightbore, I was getting 300fps consistently with .25g BBs. With the stock 495mm inner barrel, I instead get 315fps with .25g BBs. Will double check the compression of the cylinder and piston head next.

Update 12/5/2006

Pictures of the mechbox have been posted to the gallery.
