Pros: Easy to fill (home and field), easy to clean, excellent seal, far more affordable than Camelback products
Cons: No insulation

I've been using the Big Zip II for about a month and am far more impressed with its features than those of my old Camelback Storm.

I've found that it's easier to fill both at home and at the field, thanks to the large, easy open zipper at the top. The opening was a major factor in my decision to switch hydration carriers, as I've gotten frustrated trying to get Hydralite powder into the Storm.

Like a teammate, I was concerned that the ziploc style opening would easily separate and cause leaks. However, I've found this to be a significant design improvement over my Camelback Storm. While I've yet to put my Platypus through an extensive amount of field use, I haven't yet encountered a leak.

The Storm relies on an o-ring in the cap, which frequently falls out, causing leaks. I've frequently lost as much as half my hydration load thanks to this design flaw.

The bite valve on the Platypus also takes some getting used to, if you're accustomed to the Camelback design. However, I was acclimated it to it on the first day of use and have found that fluid flows better through the Platypus design than it did through the Storm's bite valve.

The large opening also makes cleaning the Big Zip far easier than cleaning the Storm. Cleaning my Camelback used to be an all day affair. The Platypus takes me only a few minutes. I remove it from my rig, drain the excess fluid, rinse the insides out, then scrub it lightly with a regular dish sponge and soap.

The only feature I miss, so far, is the insulation provided by the Storm. However, given that the Platypus cost less than half what I paid for my Storm, I'm not convinced the insulation was worth the markup.

If you're considering a replacement to your existing hydration system or looking for one to start with, I highly recommend the Platypus systems. They're very affordable, more accessible than Camelback platforms and simply easier to maintain.
