The recently released Classic Army Lightweight G3 Metal body ships with three main components:
1. The left and right side of the upper receiver.
2. A complete lower receiver.
3. Several washers and the opposing retainer for the selector lever.
Out of the box, I found the body to be well made and relatively well fitting. Both halves of the upper receiver were pre-mated in the packaging with all three screws inserted to hold them in place. Having no experience with the original CA G3 body, I cannot claim whether or not the upper receiver's fit is better on the new kit. However, given the relative ease with which I was able to construct the upper, I'd say things have been improved.
On the whole, I found the assembly of the upper receiver to be on par with the assembly of a plastic G3 upper. Namely, reinserting the bolt cover, its associated springs and the upper insert piece to be downright annoying. In essence, I don't think there's a way to really improve on how those pieces fit together.
I found that when merging the receiver to the cocking tube, it is best to leave out the spacer used in the plastic body. In my original fitting, I left the spacer in place, to much annoyance. After reassembling the body a second time, I left the spacer out and found that there is enough flexibility in the forward portion of the upper receiver, that the setting will tighten down over the cocking tube's retainers and the outter barrel quite nicely.
The lower receiver speaks for itself. It's a single piece, molded precisely after the plastic body. I find little or nothing to say about it.
My biggest disappointment with this kit was the selector lever's opposing nut and the end cap. The selector lever-nut was not pre-drilled for the set-screw and I wasn't able to use it. Finally, the end-cap required some dremelling to properly fit a stock onto the receiver. Unfortunately, the solution was observed by Obsidian, of LSA, and I didn't observe his efforts. On later installations, I shall try to get pictures of what he did.
On the whole, I'm impressed with the rock-solid feel of the metal body merged with the cocking tube. This kit solidly cures any body flex and creaking associated with a plastic G3. Furthermore, this kit seems more suitable for beginners to install. It's still not an easy task to complete. But it's well worth the time and relatively small investment.
