The Military Line
The M4 Series Crane Stock is a retractable stock replacement that changes the dimensions and functionality of the original stock.
It is a much wider stock then the original M4 retractable stock.
The real-steel crane stock contains two storage compartments along either side of the stock-shaft. Typically, SF troops store batteries in these locations (although anything that fits can be effectively stored).
The Airsoft Line
In the airsoft world, the PRIME version/replica of the crane stock can house your rechargeable batteries. It also retains the native ability to retract to various lengths. The battery housing can effectively hold a 9.6V 3300Mah battery. which should be more than enough juice for a typical skirmish. (even for those who are a little trigger happy)
To house the batteries, one simply removes the storage compartment lids and then slides their battery sticks down into the stock's openings.

Personal Experience
When I ordered my gun from Airsoft Extreme, I had them put this stock on my M4.
Everyone and their step-cousin has an M4 - and everyone does a little tweaking to be original. While I wanted something unique - I wanted it to be functional. So, I was stuck between the AN/PEQ2 and the crane stock.
I ultimately chose the crane stock because of its ability to house MASSIVE battery packs. (plus it looked ultra-swank)
In retrospect, it was a very smart move. The crane stock is more comfortable then the original stock (especially for someone my size: 6\'6\"). It\'s bulky and sturdy. The shape of the stock provides functionality akin to a cheek rest. I can\'t emphasize the comfort of the stock.
The issue when it comes to crane stocks is which brand to buy. There are a plethora of different options. The answer really comes down to functionality or looks.
There is no question that the Zenith crane stock is an exact replica of the real thing. Much closer in dimensions and styling then the Prime. Don\'t get me wrong, the Prime stock is very similar, but not a carbon copy. The difference between the Zenith and the Prime is the space allotted to batteries. You can store a lot more juice in the Prime stock.
In truth, I don\'t think you could go wrong in either case. Both are made from strong material and are built to last. It really depends on your desire to have the best replica or the most functional replica.
Talking about durability, I can\'t complain. The stock is a rock. I\'ve dropped it, stepped on it, slung it around ... no issues. You\'d be hard pressed to ruin it.
The only real set back is the batteries themselves. It is cumbersome to slide the batteries in and out and get the cables \"just right\" to allow full retraction of the stock. Once you have the skill down though, you are good to go.
I have no complaints so far. If you are in the market for a new battery storage medium or just want something unique ... the prime stock will do both.

Don't get me wrong, this is a nice product and sports good wall thicknesses for a solid, durable construction. It looks pretty good as well.
The problem I have with this stock is how sloppy and tedious the wiring is......once installed it works fine, but in order to get a clean, no-battery wire look, you have to route the wires through the buffer tube obviously. This is a pain really and not very convenient if you have to disassemble your gun at any point. Furthermore, in order to do so, you have to cut the buffer tube extension on the receiver which is another annoying task, especially on metal receivers.
Lastly, for the way it is set up, you have to pull the stock off in order to charge your battery. While not inherently a big deal, it is more hassle than it is worth in my opinion.
