In an unique situation with my particular rig, I was looking for a large pouch that could double as a SAW 200rd drum pouch as well as a dump pouch on my SOTech Tomcat chest rig (I got the modular version of this pouch, not the dropleg). The reason is because I frequently carry different weapons, and I was hoping to find something that I could leave on my rig and would fill multiple roles, i.e. carry Asahi M249 box mags, serve as dump pouch for all types of AEG mags, serve as utility storage. This HSGI pouch does just that and surprised me in another way.
First of all, it as an HSGI product, i.e. well-built. It is thought-out well and like many of their products, it makes sense and works. In this case, the pouch has a removeable plastic stiffener that slides into place, creating a box-shape at the top of the pouch. This keeps it open and spread out when stuffing mags in. In relation to that, there are shock cord on each side to tighten the flap around that stiffener so mags can\'t sneak out the sides. With the stiffener removed, the pouch becomes \"soft\", such that is can collapse down on itself some, making it lower-profile. Another example is the zippered slot in the top. When closed, for use with a gas mask for example, it keeps things out. When open, it serves as the slot to shove mags in.
This pouch is huge. Since I just got this pouch last week, I haven\'t completely filled it out to check how many M16 mags it can hold, but was told 12+. To my surprise, it can hold TWO 200rd SAW box mags. Very cool, as I wasn\'t expecting that, and it allows me to consolidate my SAW loadout.
On one side of the pouch, a small pocket with a velcro flap can be used for small items, such as a compass. On the other side, more PALS webbing is present to attach small pouches.
The only downside to this pouch is that the top opening is a bit narrow, so it isn\'t as fast to shove mags in as I\'ve experienced with a TT dump pouch for example. However, that may change once the pouch is broken in some, as I\'ve only used it briefly.
So far, I\'m very impressed with this pouch, especially since it completely fits my needs when I wasn\'t expecting a product to be on the market that would do so.
