Currently I carry my sidearm in a low slung thigh holster. This is uncomfortable and allows dirt to get into the gun's action when I crawl.

Recently I have seen several players with their pistols sitting in horizontal holsters above the pouches on their vests. The seems to be to be a very comfortable and practical way to carry a handgun. Can someone who has one of these enlighten me on this? Does this sort of holster only work with modular vests or vests with a special attachment point? Sadly my own vest is relatively crude and has no provision for any attachments to the top.

Trench, the config I believe you are referring to is an HSGI holster which can be mounted horizontally. BHI also makes one from their CQC series that can be rotated to different angles.

Those are then mounted on plate carrier webbing or bibs, like the SOTech Hellcat bib or the Wasatch/Weesatch plate carrier chest webbing, for example
Another local player used a TT modular holster, rigging up the multiple MALICE clips to be able to run the holster horizontal on his TT MAV (modular vest).

So yes, in essence, this is all modular gear. However, the only restriction to gear is your imagination, as that is how many designs come to market.....guys experimenting with their needs.

Pics of HSGI holster on plate carrier (Wasatch).

That is exactly the set-up I am thinking of. Thanks. What sort of attachment points does it use? I'm wondering how much modification or jury-rigging it would take to work with my own preffered vest.

What sort of attachment points does it use? MOLLE/PALS. Pretty much the standard for modular gear.

Well since I have no hands on experience with modular gear that means nothing to me, sadly. I'll have to do some more research online and/or examine an example of such at my next skirmish.

Thanks for the info, Wolv.

Yeah, it is much, much easier to show than explain. Catch one of us at a skirmish.

This might give you a little better idea of how the PALS and MOLLE systems work. This example shows how to use Tactical Tailor MALICE clips. These clips are viewed by many as a significant improvement over the snap-attach system used by the military.
